| Other than the obvious anime addiction, what else do you enjoy? |

I'm a total media junkie to be honest - films, tv, anime, music, gaming. Anything which flashes or makes sound basically :p. Other than that i like to dabble in whatever takes my fancy really. A friend installed linux on my lappy so im gradually picking up command line tricks and so and so forth - im certainly not a tech head but hey, anything that helps me with the aforementioned sound and vision gets my vote. Academically im a total bookworm but at the same time....not, mainly due to laziness! I'm hoping to study either Early/Classical History, Philosophy or Theology at Uni. I love the big questions in the world. Why we're here, is there a God etc etc leave it to the scientists to better the physical world, the philosophers will take care of the cognitive. |

Its the one genre thats not afraid to be "deep" or ask some serious questions. Hollywood is a no-go area and other countries still lack the funding and/or support to truly bring out some blockbusters. They have their hits certainly but anime is in the lucky position through which its popular enough to garner the big bucks - but also has the audience to take in stuff which wouldn't be touched by Hollywood with a barge pole. Apart from that its also a fascinating (and above all) easy way to study Japanese culture. Its possible that i'll study eastern philosophy/history while at uni and Evangelion gives you more than enough food for thought in the philosophy department! Im not as dense to believe that i can watch Eva and then claim absolute knowledge but it helps you get a rough idea of Japanese humour and beliefs. After all you have the US has poop jokes and the English have irony! Oh and of course the art, how could i forget the art! Anime is the last bastion of animation, with everyone going CGI lately its refreshing to put on a Ghibli film and see the beautiful visuals it gently sends your way. With CGI there's no skill in the action sequences - theres no heart, someone just sat down at the desk, opened up a program and had software help him do the job. With anime you know that action sequence took bloody ages to do - you can respect the hard work of the animators and see the human edge to art. |
