Paranoia Agent's review

Paranoia Agent scored this with 8/10. Disagree?

Hellsing is a gutsy, stylish re-interpretation of the vampire myth, taking place in modern day England it centres on a clandestine organization of Vampire hunters called Hellsing. Head of the organization is Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing, a stubborn but level-headed young woman who holds the secret to Hellsing's most potent weapon, Alucard; an all powerful Vampire dutifully bound to protect and serve his human masters.

Despite it's unoriginal premise, 'Hellsing' is an oft brilliant and entertaining series, at times it can degenerate into cliché but some novel ideas (the notion of instant or man made vampires) help lift it above similar genre fare. The action sequences are deftly executed, showcasing a flair for violence that piles on the gore, guns and style with vicious aplomb. The superbly handled script crackles with some great one liners (giving our laconic hero ample opportunity to shine) and grants the seemingly shallow story a surprising amount of depth.

The action often segues into wide expanses of plot that gradually pencil in the tangled histories of Hellsing's eclectic cast of characters. There's Walter; the seemingly mild mannered Butler who goes by the alias 'Angel of Death', the icily cool Incognito and my personal favourite - Alexander Anderson, a bayonet wielding Catholic priest who'd have your local congregation cowering behind their pews! Then there's Alucard himself, garbed in a crimson hat and trench coat whilst sporting a pair of handguns that would make Vash from Trigun blush. He's the epitome of gothic cool and would certainly give Vampire Hunter D a run for his money. If I were forced to make a complaint, it would be that the dark vein of black humour, which saturated Hellsing's manga incarnation, has all but been expunged from the anime; a few laughs here and there wouldn't have gone amiss.

Animated by the talented folks at Gonzo and using newer digimation techniques, Hellsing is a solid looking anime. The characters are realised in amazing detail with crystal lines and that unmistakable digital sheen. Special mention must also go to the striking use of colour; blood red skies and heavy blacks help create an evocative gothic atmosphere reminiscent of old Hammer Horror movies.

Proceedings are really enlivened by a great soundtrack; gothic flavoured classical pieces sit alongside throbbing heavy metal, and if it wasn't for the poodle rock ballad that accompanies the ending credits - it'd be nigh on perfect!

A balls to the wall anime series, loaded with enough fantastic characters, slick animation and macabre action to satiate even the hungriest of bloodsuckers! So put down that copy of 'Vampire Wars' and give Hellsing a look instead, you won't regret it.

I enjoyed Hellsing. It's a great action anime, and although the story isn't too deep, the characters are strong enough to carry the story right through to the end. Alucard is an awesome character :)

Alucard's pretty damn cool, but Paladin Anderson(g)'s bloody brilliant.

Hellsing is an excellent anime and one Iwould highly recomended watching in dubbed form. Now I know alot of anime fans don't like watching dubs and I admit that some of the attempts at english accents are awful (plus I've never heard anyone call someone a cocker). But the voice actor for Alucard in this series is fantastic and it would be a crime to miss out on his performance.
Now though I love this series I would highly recommened getting the manga as well. Don't get me wrong the anime is very good but it pales in comparisonto the vastly superior drawn version.
Despite that I'd still recommened watching the anime because it still rocks so hard.

The series is very gritty. Although i would of prefered the story to follow the same lines as the manga.

But otherwise i loved it, and i can only hope the rumours of a second series are true.

Hellsing is a classic told in a refreshing new way. I can't believe Kouta Hirano didn't want them to continue making the series. I bot the mangas just because of the series. Mangas were great / Anime was better. hmmm...could that be the reason?

Stunningly stylish anime series, the more i watched the more i loved it. Its a true shame the creator of the original manga threw a hissyfit and wouldnt let them make a second series.

Absolutely smashing! I preferred it Dubbed purely because of Alucard's voice actor - he does it sooo well! Wish there was a second season

Has anyone noticed its not just the voices changed in the dubbed setting? Its seems like some of the other audio (SFX/Music) are slightly different too. Either way the dubbings stiill good.

Actually, it would be quite odd for a second seaon to appear. After all, the point of manga to anime conversions is to sell more manga. i doubt Hirano threw much of a fit at all.

On topic, an excellent series, but leaves out quite a bit of the actual story, which can be found... in the manga!

19. Comment by Loyal Integra Fanboy!

The studio could only afford 13 episodes, hence the Incognito at the end, not the Millenium story of the manga. A new OVA coming soon, can't wait! Hellsing rocks my socks! One of the finest animes out there with a fantastic soundtrack to boot!

20. Comment by Xariyn

I loved Hellsing, the Characters were well developed and layered, especialy Alucard, personally I much prefer the Japanese with english subtitles, But the whole thing is amazing, I highly recommend both the manga and the anime, they are both well worth it. Alucard is what makes Hellsing what it is.

There were two series' which got me into anime. One was 'Ghost in the shell: standalone complex' the other 'Hellsing'. Superb on every level and genuinely refreshing.

22. Comment by Major

The anime was certainly entertaining, especially when it's compared to the manga. But it still doesn't live up to the achievement of the manga. The scenes where bloods supposeto come, there isn't any to be seen. The plot is sometimes questionable. But I suppose it was good in it's own way. The music was good and most of the scenes were descent. I just wish they could have made it better

Posted on Sun, 25 Sep 2005. Major rated "Hellsing": 8 out of 10.

23. Comment by jorkke

everything was great in this anime

24. Comment by Midian of London

I agree with the Major about the fact that the manga outweighted the anime in terms of achievement. I would go as far as to say that the anime never matched the anime as far as storyline, realism, or having the full and thrilling experience that the manga offers. The music was smashing and there were some cool scenes in the anime.

25. Comment by necrowarrior

this is one of the first anime ive watched - and its amazing. its dark, gory and action packed stuff. But i'd say that the detail and quality of the animation is what sets this above most other anime dealing with similar genre.
As i can all of you loved this one so i'll just recommend a similar anime.
Trinity Blood- its equally good .... if not better!

26. Comment by Catalyst.

ROFL @ so many 10/10.

I loved the series, but it lacked after episode 7, there was so much that could have been done, but no Gonzo went off on their own little story. Eh, all in all, good not great.
