Paranoia Agent's review

Paranoia Agent scored this with 9/10. Disagree?

FLCL bears all the hallmarks of a post Eva anime, there's the pre-requisite fighting robots and angst ridden teenagers all thrown headlong into a melting-pot of emotion and intrigue, this time though Gainax has burnt the rulebook and turned the genre they helped create on its head. Brimming with invention, wicked humour and a wonderful grasp of the surreal FLCL is hard to pin down. The story comes to a head (literally) after apathetic teen Naota is run over by a Vespa ridin' bass playing femme-fatale named Haruko, this however is the least of his worries…

What follows is probably the boldest most innovative and downright entertaining anime in years, I lost count of the number of times FLCL had me grinning in disbelief, I simply loved everything about it, the characters are easy to relate to (despite their exceptional circumstances) and things never descend into the nagging melodramatics that bogged down the latter part of Evangelion, it's a refreshingly original and wild ride that I for one am in no hurry to get off.

Being a newer and therefore digital animation FLCL is an absolute corker to look at; razor-sharp visuals, vibrant solid colours and alarmingly silky animation make for the most visually satisfying anime I for one have ever seen. Throw some top drawer art direction and character design into the bargain and you have an anime that really is the complete visual package.

FLCL also boasts a fantastic soundtrack by jap-pop rockers The Pillows who’s swelling melodies and buzzsaw hooks keeps your ears entertained and your toes tapping throughout, mixing healthy doses of snotty punk and mellower indie-rock it makes for an intense and varied soundtrack that fits the edgy nature of the show to a tee.

Riotously wacky, undeniably insane and utterly, utterly marvellous, Fooly Cooly is without doubt the bravest and most refreshing anime to surface since Eva rocked the anime world all those years ago.

Start praying for a Region 2 release.

When I first saw this mini series it rapidly took the top spot as my favourite anime. When you first start watching it everthing seems to be almost excel saga like in its randomness, but as the show progress's suddenly all these seemingly mad events come together and everything sort of clicks into place. And the way the visuals, music and dialogue work together is beautiful to behold. My comments really don't do this anime justice, no one can be told what FLCL is, they have to experience it.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best anime series/OVAs to come out, ever. What's not to love when GAiNAX and Production IG team up to make a story about robots popping out of a kid's head after an alien hits him with her bass guitar?

I’ve just started watching FLCL today (seen the first six episodes so far) and I have to say this is great, quirky and very funny. The animation on the facial expressions is priceless .Some scenes come thick and fast, like the Manga style scene in the first episode, that’s a killer to keep up with especially with subtitles on! The characters are just that ‘real’ characters, Haruko is especially mental. I can’t wait to see the rest of the series. 

FLCL is one of the greatest series I have ever had the joy of watching, anime or not. It has everything, entertaining characters, outstanding music, beautiful artwork, and a story told through elaborate metaphors. It's a must see for any anime enthusiast.

This is the craziest show ever , genius story , and if you go even deeper everytime you watch you learn a new thing!

Go deep into what the characters say its enjoyable in different levels , thats why 2 episodes is enough to satisfy one dvd!

One of the best anime ever!

This is the BEST anime ever! Who needs magical girls and shoujo-romance when you have FuriKuri? The fluid, unconventional style in which this madcap work of art is drawn had me at first glance. But it's the show itself that really gets you in. The characters are interestingly designed and quite believable despite the overall craziness. I think Haruko's awesome! And we just can't stop singing Ride on Shooting Star! I also can't get over the witty cultural references featured throughout and the wicked sense of humor. And before I forget, the soundtrack is really worth downloading or buying. It's extremely catchy j-rock that features elaborate yet breezy guitar work and some of the tracks have some primitive stone age drumbeats in them. Last Dinosaur, anyone?

I really don't know how to go about describing this...for starters, it probably isn't for everyone. some viewers will spend the entire duration thinking "what the...?" but that's all part of its charm. even though the series is only six episodes long we are presented with a varied, likeable and colourful cast of characters, an imaginative and surprisingly deep story told at breakneck speed and top quality animation. the character designs and some of the in-jokes are very much in the Gainax style but in summing up this show is highly original and utterly insane in the best possible way. The region 2 DVD release cannot come soon enough.

23. Comment by Takuhii

I think FLCL (Furi Kuri) is absolutely excellent. It messes with your head every step of the way, and the way the main building that appears to be the centre of everything resembles a giant steam iron is comical!! PLUS it "discharges" at the same time EVERY day.

Excellent style of anime the production team should pat themselves on the back. It beldns many genres together, at one point all the animation reverts to a comicbook style (Manga) moving from frame to frame to tell the story (I believe the main character and his father are arguing).

Very comical, I would reommend this to any one who likes to think about what they are watching!!

Animation was awesome but I found it a little too wacky to find it enjoyable. Great characters and setting but a weak plot. I think it’s over hyped and a little pretentious, sorry, not for me.

the only information relating the vespa is that it's a vespa ss (model name shown in flont of vespa), there are many ss models of the vespa , google the model and try to compare it to haruko's vespa.
