Paranoia Agent's review

Paranoia Agent scored this with 9/10. Disagree?

Berserk is hands down my favourite manga release of recent years, an uncompromising blend of horror, action and war, this genre busting adventure has already taken Japan and the U.S by storm. It has spawned numerous tie-ins including merchandise, a video game and most interestingly a T.V series.

Being a bit of a fan I approached this series with a mixture of trepidation and high expectation. Berserk really is an ambitious manga and I was anxious to see if Miura's epic vision could be squeezed into a 25-episode anime that entertained whilst still doing the series justice.

Berserk follows the exploits of Guts a frighteningly skilled warrior who wields a sword the size of an ironing board, scarred of past and bereft of arm Guts bears a serious grudge against Griffith the demonic king of Midland.
The first episode serves as something of a primer with a gnarled, teeth-gnashing Guts dishing out the pain and slaying a particularly nasty snake-demon, after that it's back to the past as the series recollects the trials and tribulations that will shape Gut's destiny and make him the snarling psycho we all know and love.

Thanks to the makers' almost reverent adherence to the source material Berserk is every bit as exciting on the small screen as it was on the page, the epic sweep of Miura's manga has made the translation intact, boasting intense action, drama and a sprinkling of political intrigue that'll keep even the most ardent fantasy fan smiling.

Battle scenes provide the meat of the action, enlivened by some gritty no holds barred mayhem they crackle with a visceral energy that never fails to get the adrenal gland pumping. The cast never take a back seat to the action though, remaining at the forefront of the story throughout.
Characterization is the real name of the game and in this respect Berserk has yet to be bettered. A solid emotional core and underlying themes of brotherhood and betrayal are what really set this apart and by the time the series reaches its devastating denouement you'll be crying out for the oft-rumoured second series.

Appearing at the height of the late nineties anime boom Berserk is a nice looking series. Whilst not exceptional it is more than serviceable for a TV show, the characters have been recreated in incredible detail and remain pleasingly faithful to their manga incarnations. There are no 'off' or ugly episodes and all in all this a fine-looking series.

In Summary

Alongside Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and Evangelion this is one of anime's heavy hitters and is more than deserving of a place on even the most casual anime fans shelf. It is also refreshingly old school and fans of Ninja scroll, Wiked City et al will lap this up.

Berserk is far and away my favourite anime of all time. Everything about it is great, but as Stuart pointed out, the real highlight is the fantastic characterization. From Guts to Griffith to Caska, these are memorably, utterly compelling personalities driven by ambition, love and revenge.

I can only hope that a UK release comes sooner rather than later. Berserk is my holy grail of anime.

This is truly one of the greatest anime out there. I love every single aspect of this show , the dark brooding plot , the thrilling action are all wonderful aspects of it.

Guts , Griffith and Caska are quite simply three of the most developed and compelling charecters in any anime.

This is well worth the import.

Berserk is the most heart wrenching Anime ever made. Isimply love it. Its a collection worth buying. I especially adore Griffithfor both his good and bad side.

The ending of the series was the worst most pointless thing I have ever seen, it ruins what was otherwise a very promising show.

I've seen the first episode and it appeared to be a solid action/fantasy series. There is promise of a good story from what I can tell and it does look good visually. The only real issue for me was the appalling intro. Otherwise, a fine anime.

My first time to see this 25 episode series was in the full 10 hour stretch. This I recommend highly. You'll be glued to your seat with anticipation for what comes next. Even though it becomes much more of a fantasy at the end, it still maintains its strength regardless of how outlandish it may seem. I was amazed by the immense power of the themes presented.

I really really enjoyed this series. I liked the gradual progression into the characters lives, seeing their physics change and develop with time. The passage of time itself is seemless, and is easily un noticable.

I loved the music, and action behind the series. The flow of the episodes build up nicely into a believable storyline. I was slightly disapointed with the direction nearer the end, but still makes for worthwhile watching.

The characters are unique. Its fun to watch their many intravert characters bond and fight alongside one another.

You guys, with this show being easily the greatest, the manga, its source material, supasses it?

There is an awful lot more to manga, and I have found the anime does follow the manga quite faithfully for most - but with time constraints characters, backstory and certain events had to be removed from the anime.

The anime, despite being the best anime I have ever seen seen, serves to be an introduction to the manga, on hell of an introduction that is.

hands down the best anime series created. like most people would say the ending really sucked but thats how the story was made so props to them for sticking with the story all the way. and the raping of caushka really pissed me off...

This is the best Anime i have ever scene. But i think the manga story is more complex and more deeper in the characters and storyline. The Anime Episodes had lots of gore and violence but besides that, it had a morale to each episode, but above all else the ending was really poor and made a big gap in the story. I Think the anime should go on from ep 25, the very end at ep 25 when the monster stabs gut's eye and then guts screams and then it finishes, leaves out how does guts get the HELL out of there in the first place. Maybe in the manga comics and books tells me how guts got out of there.

I am 16 years old. Most teenagers would think beserk is nonsense and stupid, but i think it is excellent and unique in many ways. The action and drama in each episode is outstanding and the plot and characters are superb

The Ending Was the most Poor, pointless, and stupid chapter i have ever scene. I really taught the series would go on from episode 25, but of coarse it did'nt. I Wish the makers of the anime series would make another series, to show how guts gets his prostetic left arm and how he got out of hell in the end.

(Those people who say that the ending 'sucked' or what have you probably don't know what a manga is. Clearly, Beserk the anime is an INTRO to get people interested in the manga since the graphic novel explains and expands waaaaaaaaaaaay into the future of Guts, Caska, and Griffith's lives -its still ongoing.)

If an anime enthusiast doesn't have this boxset sitting on their shelf next to good old Akira or the original Ghost in the Shell movie well... They don't know anime!

This anime series is superb to the very end if at least under one aspect: Characterization. :)
