A ton of Howl’s Moving Castle news

Following yesterdays news that Miyazaki’s latest film Howl’s Moving Castle broke Japanese box office records; online UK publications The Guardian (Unlimited Film) and the BBC have produced their own takes on this news- both referencing the British source material (book of same name by Diana Wynne Jones). Given that Howl’s Moving Castle is from a British author, I think it would be fair to say that the film has the potential to garner much more attention over here than a typical anime feature.

Also, in other Howl’s Moving Castle news, Pete Docter (the director of Monsters Inc.) will be in charge of the English language dub of the film. The original choice, John Lasseter (who directed the English version of Spirited Away), is tied up with his current project; Pixar’s upcoming animated film- Cars.

Lastly, the ‘Daily Yomiuri’ has published an interview with Toshio Suzuki- the president of Studio Ghibli (the animation house behind the likes of Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle) and long standing friend of Miyazaki.

  • “One time, Miya-san summoned a couple who he’d heard were living together. He told them that they should get married, and do so at the studio. But the woman said: ‘I respect you, Mr. Miyazaki, and I know you’re in charge here. But please don’t interfere with our private lives.’ Upon hearing that, Miya-san looked down, totally crestfallen!” says Suzuki, who can’t keep from laughing as he relates the tale that sheds light on his impression of his staff as an extended family.
