Today, the Japanese Sports Nippon newspaper has announced that the hit anime series Space Battleship Yamato (known overseas as Star Blazers) is set to receive a Hollywood movie, which will be produced by Skydance Productions (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, World War Z). Christopher McQuarrie (Jack ReacherMission: Impossible 5) is currently slated to direct the feature, with Shoji Nishizaki, the adopted son of Space Battleship Yamato producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki listed as an executive producer.

The movie is expected to enter production after the completion of Mission: Impossible 5 and is expected to be released in 2017.

A Japanese live-action adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato was released in Japan in 2010 and then released in the United Kingdom by Manga Entertainment UK on DVD and blu-ray last summer.
