Tomino’s “Gundam: Reconguista in G” to be half a year long

This year marks 35 years since the debut of Sunrise’s Mobile Suit Gundam anime, which would go on to spark a huge multimedia franchise, so of course, Sunrine will want to commemorate the occasion. The seventh episode of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn opened in cinemas in Japan last month, a four episode adaptation of the manga Gundam: The Origin will open in Japanese cinemas next Spring and of course, it was announced that franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino will be returning to the franchise to helm Gundam: Reconguista in G; marking his return to the franchise following the 2005-2006 Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam film trilogy.

In an interview with the Japanese “Anime Busience” magazine, the seventy-two year old confirmed that the series is currently planned to run for two “seasons”, which unless it later gets a second season like 2007’s Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and last year’s Gundam Build Fighters, will make it the shortest TV anime in the franchise. Gundam: Reconguista in G will premiere this Autumn – the same time that the sequel series to Gundam Build Fighters is slated to air.

The series, which was previously revealed in March, is set in the “Reguild Century”, which takes place after the franchise’s well known Universal Century. Gundam: Reconguista in G follows Beruri Zenamu, a trainee pilot in the Capital Guard, an organisation dedicated to protecting a space elevator.

Ken’ichi Yoshia (Eureka Seven) will be in charge of designing the characters, while the series’ titular mechs will be designed by Akira Yasuda (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion), Ippei Gyobo (Sacred Seven) and Kimitoshi Yamane (Cowboy Bebop, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED). The soundtrack will be scored by Yuugo Kanno (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust CrusadersPsycho-Pass).
