Himizu Wins Terracotta Far East Film Festival Audience Award

The 4th Annual Terracotta Far East Film Festival wrapped up yesterday with Sion Sono’s live action adaptation of the manga Himizu winning the Audience Award.

Synopsis

The film is based on Minoru Furuya’s manga about a cynical high school kid named Sumida (Shota Sometani) who desires to be a normal kid but a difficult background causes him to suffer an identity crisis where his anger threatens to engulf and destroy him. His only life lines are a community of refugees from the March 11th earthquake and tsunami and his classmate Chazawa (Fumi Nikaidou) who struggles to keep him sane.

Himizu is seen as a return to form for director Sion Sono (Cold Fish) and is winning awards at festivals around the world including at the Deauville Asian Film Festival where Sono won the Critics Award. It had its World Premiere at the 2011 Venice Film Festival where it played In Competition and lead actor Shota Sometani and lead actress Fumi Nikaidou took away major acting awards for their performances. Legendary Japanese actor Denden who co-stars in the film was present at the Terracotta Far East Film Festival for a Q&A after the film and accepted the award on behalf of the director.
