The trailer for the first half of the latest anime adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki’s manga Rurouni Kenshin has started streaming on the official website.



Synopsis

The story takes place during the early Meiji era and follows a wanderer named Himura Kenshin who was once an elite assassin during the final years of the Edo period as the Tokugawa shogunate came to an end. Walking away from a life of violence he now offers protection to those in need in order to atone for his actions. His travels lead him to meet various characters including new friends and enemies from his past.

Named Rurouni Kenshin: Shin Kyoto-Hen, the anime series will remake the second story-arc, the Kyoto story arc, and will focus on depicting the battle of Kenshin Himura and Makoto Shishio from the point of view of Oniwabanshū ninja Misao Makimachi. The project sees Studio DEEN, animators of the original anime from 1997-1998, returning to the franchise alongside original director Kazuhiro Furuhashi who is directing a script from Mari Okada (Fractale, Hanasaku Iroha). The cast includes Mayo Suzukaze as Kenshin, Masanori Ikeda as Shishio, Tomo Sakurai as Misao Makimachi.

The first half will debut in two cinemas, Tokyo's Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro theater and Osaka's Cine-Libre Umeda theater from the 17th of December for a week of advance screenings before its video release. Aniplex of America are in negotiations for the English language rights.
