I think it might be fair to say that Bodacious Space Pirates beat the expectations of many on the Anime UK News forums by becoming one of the biggest hits from the spring season. Well that space saga is set to continue in movie form as announcements at the end of the show and on the anime’s official website. Details are lacking at present time but here’s how a big budget adaptation might appear.

Bodacious Space Pirates (Mōretsu Pirates) is an adaptation of the sci-fi comedy light novel series Mini-Skirt Uchū Kaizoku (Mini-Skirt Space Pirates) written by Yūichi Sasamoto (Venus Wars, Dirty Pair). It followed high school student Marika who inherits the space pirate ship Bentenmaru from her father and she soon finds herself embarking on a new life of space piracy. The show was animated by Satelight (Aquarion Evol) and directed by Tatsuo Sato (Cat Soup, Martian Successor Nadesico) while animation direction was overseen by Hiroshi Takeuchi (Cowboy Bebop, The Big O), art design came from Masahiro Sato (Armitage III, Colorful, House of Five Leaves). Hyadain provided the opening theme.

Voice actors from the television series included Mikako Komatsu (Keita in Natsuiro Kiseki) as Marika, Kana Hanazawa (Mayuri Shiina in Steins;Gate) as Chiaki, Keiji Fujiwara (Ladd Russo in Baccano!) as Hyakume, Masaya Matsukaze (Kasper Hekmatyar in Jormungand) as Kane Mac Dougall, and Shizuka Itou (Haruka Morishima in Amagami SS) as Misa Grandwood.

"they went looking for pirates....and they found high school girls"

*yawn* was there ever any doubt that was what they were going to find? I would have been much more surprised if they actually did find pirates. For an anime that is presumably uber OTT and ridiculous that was a very boring trailer.

 That was some very porked up gobshyte of a tailer. I nearly pissed myself at that "what they found was school girls" [does The Scream impression]. Pugwash meets Nedesico.

So I take it it was actually good after about 6 episodes of nothing happening? Because the start being slower than UPS when delivering my items (>>) made me drop it.

Space Pirates was a lot of fun, its always nice for a series to slowly introduce us to the characters and setting, when you get to the later stages it becomes pretty good, some arcs are weaker than others though.

Yeah, i'm happy with a movie rather than a second series. Could be a really epic one considering how the series ended. I look forward to it!

This is the most non-sensical complaint I keep hearing about Mouretsu Pirates. There is plenty of stuff going on at the beginning and throughout. Do you really need explosions and death defying stunts that badly?

You'd be surprised how many idiots levied that very complaint.

I seriously need to sit down and marathon the rest of the show (got to the princess arc and got a through kick in the balls by life)

I believe that's from Captain Pugwash.

Ah, thanks for that. I was thinking of something else... so I went searching and found it...

No, I just need something to keep me engaged. At least, the first few episodes definitely seem to be one to marathon instead of watching week to week.

Now that it's finished, I might do just that when I can find the time.
