Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Anime Limited's first law of equal commerce. Even without the Philosopher's Stone to unbind us from these laws however, Anime Limited's Ultimate Editions have offered great quality and craftmanship without having to sacrifice an arm and a leg - and now, the anime distrbutor is preparing to transmute such a release for the Blu-ray debut of Studio Bones' 2003 cult classic Fullmetal Alchemist.

Originally released on DVD In the United KIngdom partly by MVM and Revelation Films, this earlier adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's science fantasy manga follows the story of Edward and Alphonse Elric, two brothers whose lives are torn apart one fateful night when the budding alchemists attempt to tap into a forbidden science and bring back their dead mother. The cost of their mistake was life-changing; Edward's left leg and Alphonse's entire body were taken as sacrifice, forcing Edward to forgo his right arm to bind his younger brother's soul to a suit of armour. When their alchemical prowess is noticed by the State Military, the brothers leave their rural childhood home and journey to the bustling capital, where they learn of the artifact that will quickly become their driving force - the Philosopher's Stone; a legendary relic said to be able to bypass the laws of Equivalent Exchange and return them to their original bodies. Every hopeful light casts a shadow however, with Alphonse and the newly appointed Fullmetal Alchemist soon discovering that there is far more to the legend than they could have ever imagined.

Andrew Partridge, the President of Anime Limited, released the following statement regarding the acquisition:

“The original Fullmetal Alchemist has a strong place in all of our hearts here at Anime Limited. It’s a show that for many people in the UK was a gateway into anime, and after being out-of-print for a long time what better way to celebrate it having been a decade since the series received it’s first release in the UK, yes it has been that long, than being able to bring the series out on DVD and for the first time on Blu-ray. Well there is one way we can think of; an Ultimate Edition Blu-ray set.”

Anime Limited are currently planning on releasing the complete series on both DVD and as a Blu-ray Ultimate Edition in 2016. The series' follow-up movie, Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa is currently available in the United Kingdom courtesy of Manga Entertainment, who also released Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, a more faithful 2009 re-adaptation of the source materal. The original manga was published in English by Viz Media.
