The first ten minutes Berserk: Golden Age I – The Egg of the Supreme King has been released to coincide its theatrical premiere yesterday.

This movie is the first of a trilogy of movies adapted from Kentarō Miura’s original manga and the opening ten minutes shows a siege scene (with some censoring) with the film’s main theme Aria, which was composed by electronic artist Hirasawa Susumu (Paprika, Paranoia Agent), playing out.

The video was originally posted on the Gyao website for a limited time. It was also region locked so only Japanese netizens could view it but an intrepid Beserk fan has posted it on YouTube so who knows how long this will last before Warner Bros. Japan swoops in.

The film is animated by Studio 4°C and directed by Toshiyuki Kubooka who has worked as animation director on notable titles like Gankutsuou, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and the Working Through Pain Segment of Batman:Gotham Knight.

I have to be honest, that didn't impress me. The blending of 2d and 3d is interesting and I know that it's not a bad looking film, yet, during the CGI intensive battle, I just couldn't shake the feeling that I was watching a cut scene on my PS2. Whenever I see cel shaded style CGI in anime I always feel like this, as I said it's not that the film looks bad, it's just that's how that style of CG makes me feel.

Also, disregarding the censored bits, the film seemed to be somewhat more tame than I thought it was going to be, considering Berserks reputation as one of the more hyper violent anime. Not that this particularly bothers me, though.

The last thing that I thought was a poor show, was that 'weekly anime series' style intro it had. Why do they insist in doing that!? This is not a weekly show. It's a movie, and we don't need to see an intro made up of what are presumably snippets of later parts of the film.

It looks... OK. I will wait to see the actual thing in some kind of non-Youtube environment before I make any firm judgements.
