Title: Anime and UK TV

Paul's article

One of the most frustrating things when you associate anime with Britain is the lack of TV exposure it's been lumbered with since it exploded onto our shores in the mid-80s with Akira.

In fact, it makes pretty disappointing reading when you compare our situation to that of our counterparts in the USA. You see, while they're happily arguing amongst themselves about when the first 12 episodes of 2003's “Last Exile” will be shown, we're still stuck with little more than re-runs of Dragonball Z and Pokemon. It really shouldn't be this way, and I can't help but think there have been some seriously incompetent decisions made when it comes to anime on British TV.

It's not like there isn't a market for anime in the UK. The continual growth of fledgling anime publishing companies like ADV UK and MVM is surely a testament to this. I mean, why would they continue to pump out and improve monthly releases if this wasn't the case?

Thinking back, anime has been given a few small chances to shine in this country, but just when we needed the companies behind these ideas to show faith in their decisions, the anime is either completely cut off from the channel or just banished to some pointless hour in the dead of night.

The Sci-Fi Channel and (the now defunct) CNX are prime examples of this.

Sci-Fi, to be fair, are probably amongst the oldest supporters of anime on UK TV - but now, even they seem to be pulling away. This apparent reluctance to show anime at decent times probably dates back to when they first premiered Evangelion on the channel along with Nadesico and Blue Gender. At its peak of interest, I clearly remember them attempting to show Evangelion (coupled with Nadesico) at 5pm on weekdays. Yes, this sounds like a totally different world - but it really happened. Sadly though, it wasn't meant to be.

As should have been expected for something that is still almost completely foreign to the British mainstream viewers, the initial ratings for this anime block were obviously poor and it was quickly decided that it should be returned to its graveyard slot – 1 night per week at about 1am.

What we needed here was someone with influence at the channel to show a little guts and perseverance and give it an honest run of at least 2-4 months. The potential to grab viewers is there in a series like Evangelion, it just needs a good amount of time to enable people to shed their preconceptions of what they think anime is all about (either cute little Pokemon or demon-tentacle-ultra-violence movie).

But no, instead of this, they closed down their internet forums, effectively saying they don't give a crap about what we are thinking, and more recently, removed the anime section from their website all together.

CNX is another example of a poorly managed attempt to push anime into the limelight. Launching with a lot of fanfare & expectation from UK anime fans, CNX's apparent ace was Cowboy Bebop. However, just as Sci-Fi continues to make mistakes with Evangelion, so CNX made one with Bebop.

You see, Cowboy Bebop is very insular in its nature and lacks a coherent storyline that will instantly grab you from one episode to the next. Had they lined it up alongside say, for example, a series like Inuyasha (showing in USA right now alongside Bebop), I'm sure they would have eventually reaped the rewards.

But again, initial viewer ratings were obviously poor and Bebop was dumped by the channel faster than you can say “space cowboy”. Along with it went another chance of bringing adult anime into the spotlight and it was no surprise to see the actual CNX channel soon follow it into oblivion.

More vital opportunities wasted thanks to poor decisions made by people that obviously don't understand their target audience.

And thus, this brings us to the current day and the future of anime on our TVs.

Sadly; I think the days of anime on Sci-Fi are nearly all but finished. With them premiering their new Excel saga shows at 5am, I can't help but get the feeling they are trying to push anime totally out of their schedule.

Toonami, the channel that replaced CNX, has at least shown us some potential. Alongside standard fare like Dragonball, they've been showing Gundam Wing and Outlaw Star for a fair few months now. This coupled with the good news that they have acquired the highly rated 'Big O' series makes me feel a little more optimistic about how they will progress in the future.

Honestly though, if this is all the anime we have to look forward to on TV in 2004, someone needs to be given a big kick up the ass. Being such an avid anime fan, it's painful to see it being wasted like this. The potential is there for it to explode in the UK, just at the moment there doesn't seem to be anyone brave enough to actually invest their money and then give it a consistent run.

With us entering the age of Digital TV and all, I can't help but imagine that an all-anime channel wouldn't be totally out of the question. Just imagine what we could watch in one day! Makes the mouth water, doesn't it?

Well, we can all dream, can't we?

Until that happens (and I wouldn't hold my breath), all we can do is just keep investing in the DVDs and hope that one day, anime is given the limelight that it justly deserves.

i was so enraged when i found out that they stopped showing anime on the sci-fi channel when i used to watch it when i was like 12 (now 16) and watching envagelion at lik 3am, i recently e-mailed the channel asking if they were ever going to show anime again, and they said it would be unlikely from the number of people who watched it when it was on- as you quite rightly said, if they showed some of the best anime such as naruto or bleach (sorry i'm a bleach frea) and then they might get some mass audiences, also the amount of anime fans has i'm sure at least doubled since when they started airing anime so if they gave it a shot then they would (i'm sure) be happy with the results

Well, don't worry. since jetix announce that teenage anime 'naruto' will be shown on jetix for the first time in the uk and narutos first offical debut in the uk, there is light of jetix showing anime shows that are for teenagers and up, thats if jetix get possitive feedback on naruto.

Not to mention rapture TV has wolfs rain and full metal alchemist. I bought the series (FMA) on DVD so stopped watching it on TV, then i found out the second disk didn't work! This ruined FMA for me as i don't want to miss the second disk otherwise i'll miss stuff and ruin it and i don't know if the TV stuff will go back from the beginning to the end. Suffice to say i'm just going to buy it again but it wasn't money well spent.
P.S. Rapture TV says its anime hour is its best rated shows so it should get more.

Can anyone tell me if ADV, Manga etc. plan to get serious in Britain and start giving us some boxsets. I know they want money so they can expand in a new sector but Japan and America get boxsets and Thinpacks (thinner boxsets with good artwork) while we get a series of volumes that end up costing us £120 when it first comes out. If we're lucky it won't have sold out by the next 7 months so will be reduced to halfprice (£60) which is about what the Americans and Japanese would pay for their boxsets. So we pay more, get it last and just because we're not in America or Japan we don't ge any cute freebies (that may be just in Japan). The UK always gets the worst deals i mean just look at the playstation 3, after price conversion from dollars to pounds it is revealed the UK consumers are paying an extra £100 over Americans. This is more than the VAT and the shipping costs so Sony obviously just wants a little more in their pockets. Sorry to be a downer but it really peeves me off when we don't get boxsets and have to pay loads more even though we get them later and lose things in translation.

well, one advice for rapture, show chrono crusade and gunslinger girl. these are the two anime shows i want to watch. My mum won't spend £20 on them as my mum say 'rent first, then buy', which is a good point, if its on rent, which isn't at blockbuster

Heh, seems the comment system ate my last post, so here we go again...

"P.S. Rapture TV says its anime hour is its best rated shows so it should get more. "

Yo, how do you know this? There actual statistical evidence to back this up or is it just hopeful thinking?

Its a sad state of affairs that we don't get much adult anime on TV, what hurts me more than anything is when everyone I talk to just puts anime down to porn and pokemon, that narks me off ROYALLY. Not so much what they say but the reason why they say it. I'm afraid the industry's gonna have a tough TOUGH fight shaking off that image, and it's gonna take some serious marketing power.

The problem has always been that the channels have tried to measure cult shows with main stream audiances. Shows like Eva and Beebop are great shows but they are not going to appeal to a general audiance they require to much work by the viewer to understand whats going on. The thing that suprises me is that toonami, cartoon network and jetix are all run by american companys who have been geting great results and futhering anime fandom in the states with shows like Inuyasha and adult swim why have they not brought these out over here.

Are Mahromantic and Mezzo DSA really the best shows Rapture can come up with. Not that I want to critisize a channel that is trying to bring something to our tv but I don't think either show is going to bring in lots of new viewers. And they started so well with Fullmetal Alchemist. I know there must an old classic they can get hold of cheap.Something that might remind Raptures target audience how great it was when you saw it as a kid. Robotech or something would be brilliant and I'm sure it would help suck in more viewers.

I Believe That Toonami Has Really Messed Itself! I Remember When It Used To Play Mainly Anime. They Had A Wide Range Of Anime That I Enjoyed Watching, Such As Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo/Universe/In Tokyo and Dragonball/Z/GT. But Now, They Have Dropped Practically All Of The Anime They Have. Now Its Filled With Show That Aren't Even Animated! I Think This Is Stupid. Yeah, Some Of The Shows Aint Too Bad But Still, More Anime Should Be Played. At First, I Thought That Was Toonami Was All About. A Channel Dedicated To Anime. Now They Screwed It Up And Turned It Into A Kiddies Channel.

I Have To Commend Rapture For Trying To Give Us More Anime, But Their Choices Of Anime Havent Been Great (Apart From FMA). They Should Try And Get Some Of The More Popular Animes.

Overall, I Reckon That The Following Should Happen Before I Even Begin To Think That UK TV Is Taking Anime Seriously:

1. Change Toonami Back To The Way It Was (With The Ship and The Robot And Showing Anime Nearly All The Time)

2. Naruto Should NOT Be Shown On Jetix! I Know That It Will Be Edited Like Hell Because I've Been Keeping Track In The States, But Still...Jetix Is A Channel Aimed At Little Children Mainly. It Should Be Shown On Something Like Toonami or Rapture

3. Late Night Uncut Anime For All The Blood Thirsty Anime Lovers Out There (Me Included). This Would Include Showing Anime Such As Elfen Lied, Blood+, Dragonball Z Uncut Would Be Nice Too

4. Reasonable Times For Anime To Be Shown If It Isnt Uncut. I'm Sure We Can All Agree There.

I Wouldnt Mind Seeing The Following Animes Shown On TV.

- Dragonball Z (I Know ITs Been Shown For Years, But I Can't Get Enough Of It)
- Dragonball Z Movies!! (I Would Love For These To Be Shown....And I Mean The Proper Dubs, Not The Crappy Ones Where They Call Piccolo, "Big Green", What The Hell Kinda Name Is That?)
- Elfen Lied
- SaiKano
- Bleach
- Tenchi Muyo/Universe (Again, A Classic Anime That I Can't Get Enough Of)
- Excel Saga
- Samurai Deeper Kyo
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (I Didn't Get A Chance To Watch It When It Was On Sci-Fi)
- Gundam SEED/Destiny
- Gundam Wing (A Classic Anime Again In My Opinion)

And Many Others......

Well, That's My Say In The Matter....Im Done For Now

it is sad that TV channels dont realise how to handle targets im just glad that DVDs and manga(the book not the company though im old enough to have read akira when the manga magazine was printing in the UK)are easier to get hold of with the internet opening peoples minds to the possiblities of not just the simpsons or mills and boon types populating the choices, as a girl when a company asks if i read they assume its romantic novels not scifi or action type i love japanese and other asian action too as well as anime but TV execs dont care that people like US exist they just take the majority of NORMs as what we should watch. youll be glad to know that ive dried up but all i relly can say is thank goodness for internet access.

I think the UK is missing out on what essentially is a massive market. I think an adult unedited, uncut, anime channel would be great. And I would definitely watch it, as would many others (as long as its given enough exposure for us to find out obout said channel) As a college student so many of my friends are getting into anime and manga, and we are more friends all the time! Another thing that would be great would be a j-rock music channel..... And another thing show Battle Royale on mainstream tv for crist's sake! There is going to be a crappy american remake and so many people have never even heard of it. I know I wrote a lot but there is so much more that needs to be said. TV people take note! Anime fans are not always(althoughh sometimes) geeks, times have changed and we need our fixes!

Sigh...
I actually rember the days when Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura and even the likes of Digimon used to play on Cartoon network and Fox Kids. What a shame such great shows were cut before they were given their proper due.
Even with Toonami showing Naruto, the presence of anime on our UK screens is extremely limited.
Why should we be so deprived??

I found this site and post by random whilst looking for a schedule list of anime that used to be shown on Sci-Fi's Anime Night back in the day because there were some random series and OVA's. They'd show that i can't remember the name of. Although it sucks that there isn't much anime in the UK I have to say I'm incredibly grateful to Sci-Fi if it wasn't for them i never would have gotten into anime at all or at least not for some time later. To this day Evangelion is one of my faves as well as Blue Gender. The only way i get to see new anime is through downloading fansubbed TV rips of unliscensed anime which if i like i buy on dvd when its licensed. For any other fans in the UK i'd suggest doing the same thing although many disagree as its in the 'grey area' of copyright laws. But to be honest i don't think the UK will ever get the good stuff broadcast (or much of anything) compared to the US, we're a small audience and Anime fans will always make up a relativly small portion of TV audiences and most of the time the DVD's we get are just the US versions with the region code changed. It sucks but i've still managed to what 30+ series OVA's OAV's and movies without TV so it's not too bad for some of us :)
